ABA Therapy Principles for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children with Disabilities

Hand in Hand ABA is the first and only ABA clinic in the world created exclusively for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) children with disabilities.

Principles and Core Values

Hand in Hand ABA is the world’s first and only ABA clinic created exclusively for Deaf and hard-of-hearing children with disabilities. Every element, from our ASL-first communication and staff to our clinical methods and therapy spaces, was designed from the ground up for this community, not retrofitted from hearing models.

Our multimodal approach mirrors how DHH children naturally sign, gesture, speak, or use PECS/AAC, placing language access and Deaf identity at the heart of care. This empowers every child to communicate authentically, gain independence, and forge deep connections with family, peers, and both Deaf and hearing communities

Integrity and Accountability

Families deserve providers who show up fully present, on time, and prepared. We honor commitments with transparent ASL/English communication and ethical care in every moment. Transparency, consent, and respect are built into our work. Serving an overlooked community demands we pioneer higher standards, not repeat the past.

Compassion That Connects

We meet Deaf children and families with empathy that sees their full lives, not just a diagnosis. We listen closely, learn from families, and adapt our work to what the child shows us in the moment as well as what is written in a plan.

Our staff blends clinical expertise with cultural warmth, validating behaviors, easing communication, and building trust before goals. True connection unlocks their world.

Innovation Rooted in Practice

Every child learns differently, so sessions burst with play, visuals, movement, and tailored ASL/PECS/AAC exploration.  We adapt with curiosity and energy, ensuring visual-first therapy feels fresh and child-led every time. Sessions are designed to be creative and individualized; especially for children who rely on ASL or other visual forms of communication.

Excellence Through Equity

Excellence means access, inclusion, and representation beyond metrics. As the world’s first DHH autism ABA clinic, we craft care from language access to affirming spaces, always prioritizing dignity alongside evidence-based growth. This responsibility guides every decision we make. We did not add Deaf children into an existing model. We created a model for them.

Family Centered and Child Led

We support people, not “fix” behaviors, with parents as true experts. Collaborating respectfully on your routines and hopes makes therapy real. Slowing to follow the child’s lead reveals profound potential.

We take time to understand each family’s routines, values, and hopes so that ABA therapy principles makes sense in their world, not only in ours.

Language Access and Identity Affirmation

Effective ABA begins with access to communication. Deaf and Hard of Hearing autistic children must have consistent, meaningful language access in order to learn, regulate, and engage. We prioritize ASL and other visual communication systems as primary, not secondary, modes of instruction.

Our interventions are designed to support skill development without compromising a child’s dignity, autonomy, or sense of self. ABA should expand a child’s ability to communicate and connect, not require them to change who they are to be understood.

What Makes Us Different | ABA Core Values

Our edge goes beyond serving only Deaf children: we were created by and for them as the world’s sole dedicated ABA clinic. Families often find so-called “ABA services” for DHH autistic kids exist in name only, shoehorned into hearing models that ignore language and culture. We respect Deaf identity and understand that behavior, learning, and communication are inseparable from culture and language.

Hand in Hand ABA breaks that cycle entirely. Every detail, from ASL-fluent staff and multimodal communication to our sensory-rich, Deaf-centered spaces, is engineered from the ground up to fuel DHH children’s authentic success.
